Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
FAQ: The 25 Most Common Questions About Honing Tools & Industrial Brushes
Answers to the questions our customers ask most frequently – from tool selection to optimal use.
Flex-Hone®
1. What is a Flex-Hone® and what is it used for?
A Flex-Hone® is a flexible honing tool with abrasive globes mounted on nylon filaments. It produces a uniform cross-hatch finish in bores, removes burrs, and improves surface quality. Main applications: cylinder finishing, valve guides, hydraulic bores, cross-hole deburring. Detailed article: Honing explained.
2. Which grit size do I need?
The grit size depends on the task: 60–120 for aggressive deburring, 180–240 for standard finishing (cylinders, valve guides), 320–600 for fine finishing and surface improvement, 800+ for a polishing effect. Most users start with 240 SC (silicon carbide). Detailed guide: Choosing the right grit.
3. What RPM should I set?
General rule: The larger the diameter, the lower the RPM. Guidelines: 4–20 mm → 600–1,200 RPM, 20–80 mm → 300–600 RPM, 80–200 mm → 100–300 RPM. Important: Always insert the tool while the spindle is running! Complete parameter table: RPM & Parameters.
4. Do I need coolant/honing oil?
Yes, absolutely. Honing oil or water-based metalworking fluid is mandatory. Dry honing causes the abrasive globes to glaze (no material removal), overheating, and accelerated tool wear. Mineral-based honing oil is ideal. Alternatives: water-based metalworking fluid or cutting oil. Never use WD-40 or brake cleaner.
5. What size for my bore?
Simply order the nominal size of your bore – the required oversize is built in at the factory; in its free state the abrasive body is larger than the nominal size. Example: 50 mm bore → Flex-Hone® 50 mm. Only for in-between dimensions choose the next larger standard size (e.g. 86 mm → 89 mm) – undersized tools will not make contact.
6. SC, AO, or BC – which abrasive type?
SC (Silicon Carbide): Standard for steel, cast iron – 80 % of all applications. AO (Aluminum Oxide): For aluminum, copper, brass – softer materials. BC (Boron Carbide): For hardened steels, ceramic coatings. D (Diamond): For Nikasil, hard chrome, extreme hardness. More details: Abrasive guide.
7. Can I use a Flex-Hone® on a CNC machine?
Yes – this is actually the preferred application for reproducible production results. Program RPM, stroke feed rate, and dwell time. Recommendation: use a floating holder so the tool compensates for alignment tolerances. The cylindrical shank fits any standard collet chuck.
8. How many bores can a Flex-Hone® process?
Depends on material, grit, and processing time: SC 240 on cast iron → approx. 50–100 motorcycle cylinders. SC 120 on steel → approx. 30–60 bores. Diamond on Nikasil → approx. 20–40 cylinders. The globes wear evenly – when the diameter drops below the bore size, it is time to replace.
Industrial Brushes
9. What types of brushes are available?
PrecisionPro offers seven main categories: Cup brushes (surface finishing), Disc brushes (edges/grooves), Tube brushes (bores/pipes), Miniature brushes (small bores), NamPower® (CNC finishing), Parts-washing brushes (wet cleaning), Flow-through brushes (recesses). Full comparison: Industrial brushes overview.
10. What is the difference between NamPower® and a standard disc brush?
NamPower® contains abrasive grain (SiC, AO, or diamond) in its nylon filaments – it is a grinding tool with controlled material removal. Standard disc brushes (wire or plain nylon) clean and polish but do not remove material in a controlled manner. NamPower® is optimized for CNC use, while disc brushes are more suited for handheld machines. Details: NamPower® abrasive brushes.
11. Wire brush or nylon brush?
Wire (steel, stainless steel, brass): Aggressive removal – rust, scale, slag, old coatings. Nylon (with or without abrasive grain): Gentler – deburring, finishing, sensitive surfaces. Rule of thumb: If you do not want to alter the surface, use nylon. If you want to remove material, use wire.
12. How do I determine the correct tube brush size?
The brush should be 5–15 % larger than the bore diameter. Example: 30 mm bore → 32–34 mm brush. Too small: no contact. Too large: jams. For cleaning applications, aim for the upper range (15 %); for deburring, be more conservative (5–10 %).
13. Are there brushes for medical technology?
Yes. Miniature brushes with nylon fill (contamination-free, metal-free) are suitable for medical technology applications: implants, cannulae, prostheses. Nylon filaments produce no metal particles. For FDA/EU compliance: nylon PA6.12 or PP fill, documented traceability.
14. Can I order custom brushes?
Yes. In addition to our standard range (over 2,700 variants), we manufacture custom brushes to your drawing or specification. Options include: custom diameters, custom lengths, special fill materials, and customer-specific shanks. Send your drawing or description to our technical sales team – you will receive a feasibility assessment and quote within 2–3 business days.
Deburring
15. What is deburring and why is it important?
Deburring is the removal of sharp edges and material protrusions (burrs) that form during machining processes (drilling, milling, stamping). Burrs cause injuries, damage sealing surfaces, promote corrosion, and compromise downstream processes. In detail: What is deburring?
16. How do I deburr cross holes?
Recommended combination: 1) Flex-Hone® through the main bore → deburrs intersection edges. 2) Miniature brush into the cross hole → removes residual burrs. Follow with compressed air to blow out debris. Details: Cross-hole deburring.
17. Can I automate deburring on a CNC machine?
Yes – with NamPower® brushes for flat surfaces/edges and Flex-Hone® for bores. Both tools have standard shanks and are integrated into the CNC process as tool changes. Typical saving: 30–60 seconds per workpiece. ROI: Pays for itself after the first batch. More: NamPower® abrasive brushes.
18. What is edge rounding and why is it required?
Edge rounding means giving sharp edges not just a burr-free finish, but a defined radius (e.g. R 0.2 mm). Reasons: injury prevention, coating adhesion (sharp edges cause coating delamination), fatigue strength (reducing notch effect), visual quality. NamPower® AD brushes produce repeatable edge rounding in the CNC process.
19. Thermal deburring (TEM) vs. brushes – when to use which?
TEM (gas explosion in a sealed chamber) deburrs all areas simultaneously – including hard-to-reach ones. However: high investment costs, no edge rounding, only economical for series production. Brush tools (Flex-Hone®, NamPower®, miniature brushes) are more flexible, more affordable, and simultaneously produce a surface finish. TEM is only worthwhile at very high volumes with extremely complex geometries.
