Step-by-Step Instructions: Cylinder Honing with Flex-Hone®
The following instructions describe honing a single cylinder using a drill press. The same steps apply when using a hand drill – pay particular attention to keeping the tool guided evenly.
- Prepare the cylinder Thoroughly clean the cylinder of oil residue, gasket remnants, and debris. Use a bore gauge to verify that the diameter is within tolerance and that there is no step or ovality present. Secure the cylinder firmly – it must not shift during honing.
- Select and mount the Flex-Hone® Choose a Flex-Hone with approx. 20 % oversize relative to the bore diameter. For cast iron cylinders: SiC grit P240. For aluminum (uncoated): AO P240. For Nikasil-coated cylinders: diamond only. Mount the shank in the drill chuck.

- Apply honing oil generously Thoroughly wet both the bore surface and the Flex-Hone with honing oil. The oil flushes away debris, cools the working zone, and prevents the tool from loading up. Reapply during honing as soon as the surface runs dry.
- Hone: Rotate and simultaneously stroke up and down Start the drill and insert the rotating Flex-Hone into the cylinder. Move it up and down at a consistent speed – approximately 1 second per stroke. Work 8–12 double strokes (up and down = 1 double stroke). The tool must extend approximately one-third of its length beyond the cylinder rim at both the top and bottom to prevent bell-mouthing.
- Remove the tool – correctly! Keep the drill running while pulling the Flex-Hone out of the cylinder. Never remove it while stationary – this will destroy the cross-hatch pattern you just created and can leave vertical scratches.
- Clean thoroughly Immediately wash the cylinder with hot soapy water and a clean cloth until no abrasive particles are visible. Dry the surface and apply a thin coat of oil to prevent corrosion. This step is critical: residual abrasive particles act like grinding paste and will destroy piston rings and the bore surface during operation.
Practical tip: After cleaning, wipe across the bore surface with a white, lint-free cloth. If the cloth shows gray discoloration, continue cleaning. Only when the cloth stays clean is the cylinder ready for assembly.
