Why stainless steel burrs need special treatment

Stainless steels are tough: the burr does not break off during drilling but deforms – and reworking it with a file or blade work hardens the edge and creates a secondary burr. On parts for food-processing, pharmaceutical or medical-device applications this is doubly critical, because every raised edge is a hygiene and corrosion risk.

The abrasive globules of the Flex-Hone tool remove the burr abrasively and radius the edge in one pass – no pressure deformation, no secondary burr, repeatable across the production run.

Matched to the material: abrasive, lubrication, tool hygiene

For stainless steels, silicon carbide is the right abrasive – aluminum oxide is for aluminum, brass and bronze. Always work with oil or emulsion: the lubrication keeps the tough swarf in suspension and prevents the globules from loading up.

Practical rule for corrosion-critical parts: keep tools dedicated to one material. A Flex-Hone that previously ran on plain carbon steel can embed foreign particles in the stainless surface – so for hygiene-critical and visible parts, keep a separate tool for each material group.

Tube ends and bores: the procedure

Choose the tool size by the nominal bore size or the tube's inside diameter, enter the bore with the tool rotating and work across the edge with even strokes. Recommended speeds: up to 12.7 mm at 1,000-1,200 rpm, up to 50 mm at 900-1,000. On through tubes, never leave the tool stationary in the bore – enter and withdraw while rotating.

Limits: what this page does not solve

Outside edges on flat surfaces and sheet metal are deburred more economically with wheel and cup brushes; chamfers to a defined size remain the job of the countersink. And hardened stainless steels above 50 HRC need the diamond version. The Flex-Hone's domain is bores, tube ends and their intersections.

Questions about tool, material and process

Which abrasive for stainless steel – SC or AO?
Silicon carbide (SC). Aluminum oxide is the abrasive for aluminum, brass and bronze. For hardened stainless steels above 50 HRC the usual rule applies: diamond.
Does deburring work harden the edge?
No – that is the difference from cutting or pressing rework: the abrasive globules remove the burr abrasively instead of deforming it. The edge is left radiused with the microstructure intact.
Do I need to lubricate differently on stainless steel?
The rule stays the same: never dry. A low-viscosity honing oil or the machine's coolant emulsion works; the tough stainless swarf makes lubrication, if anything, even more important than on gray cast iron.
Can I use the same tool for carbon steel and stainless?
Technically yes, but for corrosion- and hygiene-critical parts better not: foreign particles from plain carbon steel can become embedded in the surface. Keep a separate tool for each material group.

Do you ship from stock?
Yes – the standard deburring sizes are in stock in Germany with high coverage; the dispatch date is shown in the stock line on each product. Business customers order on account with 30 days' payment terms.
We produce series parts from 1.4301/1.4404 (304/316L) – who advises on the process?
