Finish Honing and Dimensional Honing: Two Processes, One Word
Two different processes go by the name of "honing". Classic dimensional honing works with rigid, positively guided honing stones on a honing machine and corrects size and form to the micrometre. Finish honing with the flexible tool comes in afterwards: it creates the functional surface – cross-hatch, plateau, deburred edges – and leaves size and geometry unchanged.
For most jobs in repair work and series-production finishing, that is exactly what is needed: no machine investment, no re-clamping, and a reproducible result that any employee can achieve after a short briefing.
How the Cross-Hatch Is Created
The cross-hatch angle results from the ratio of rotational speed to stroke speed – an included angle of around 45° has proven effective. Recommended speeds by bore Ø: up to 12.7 mm at 1,000-1,200 rpm, up to 50 mm at 900-1,000, up to 95 mm at 600-900, larger bores slower – never above 1,200 rpm. Always work with oil or emulsion and stroke the rotating tool evenly; 5-12 double strokes are usually enough.
The Right Size: Order the Nominal Bore Size
The Flex-Hone tool leaves the factory larger than its nominal size – this oversize creates the contact pressure of the abrasive globules. You simply order the nominal size of your bore; for in-between sizes, the next larger standard size (86 mm → 89 mm). Rules of thumb such as "add 10-20% oversize" lead to buying the wrong size.
- Tool slightly oversized from the factory (dashed) – the contact preload is built in. Therefore: order the nominal size, bore Ø 50 mm → tool 50 mm.
- Measured an in-between size (e.g. 86 mm)?
- Order the next larger standard size (89 mm) – never round down: a tool that is too small generates no contact pressure.
